ABSTRACT

This study discovers on the causes why pupils in Grade 5 of Jose T. Unson Memorial Elementary School have poor communication skills in English. Data were collected through distribution of questionnaires to the respondents. The study specifically focuses on the kinds of learning materials, as well as the strategies, English teachers must use in enriching the English vocabulary of the said pupils. Furthermore, the study assessed the effect of the environment in learning using the English language. The results showed that the most used teaching materials in enriching English vocabulary are the printed learning materials like books, dictionaries, etc. and video presentation downloaded by the teachers. As for most of the Grade 5 pupils, they would like to have video presentations as a tool to use in classes to enrich their English vocabulary. However, environment adds to the factors why there is hindrance in learning the English language like having JTUMES pupils who grew up in a Filipino speaking community. Secondly, most of the pupils are living in a family whose medium of communication is not the English language. Based on the result of the study, the researchers come up with an action plan that would help pupils enrich their English vocabulary—a way to become good communicators of the second language.
