ABSTRACT

Purpose

The study aimed to provide innovative strategy to bring about an improvement in the performance of students in mathematics.

Design
This study made use of experimental method utilizing two group’s pretest- posttest design. The respondents of the study were the 48 food technology students divided into two sections. FoodTech 11A was exposed to modular instruction using self-paced learning. Whereas, Foodtech 11B was exposed to modular instruction but using peer-assisted learning.

Findings
The findings of the study revealed that the overall mean performance of the controlled and experimental group were higher than that of the pretest. This signifies that using the developed module in teaching functions increased the level of performance of the two groups of respondents. However, on the level of performance of the two groups, it was found to be significant since the mean scores in the posttest of the experimental group were higher than the controlled group. This implies that the use of the modular instruction combined with another learning model (peer-assisted learning) greatly affect and is contributory to the better performance of the students in the experimental group. The Data suggests that both strategies in teaching increased the level of performance of the two group of respondents but remarkable increased was noted in the group taught using the innovative instruction (modular instruction + peer-assisted learning). The results also imply that learning materials (books, modules, etc.) is indeed an effective tool in providing quality education among our learners. Thus, shortage of learning materials such as books may not be a hindrance to learning anymore. As shown in this research, if teachers would use strategies like modular instruction + peer assisted learning, even when shortage of books is present, performance of students can improve.

Delimitation
This study was delimited to a certain learning competencies in general mathematics specifically on functions. The curriculum guide was strictly followed in the selection of topics during the experimentation.

Originality
The researcher combined two learning enhancement models and test its effectiveness
a. Modular instruction + self-paced learning
b. Modular instruction + peer-assisted learning
