ABSTRACT

The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of digital learning tools in teaching Animation in Grade 11 – TVL-ICT students in Alitagtag Senior High School. The performance was determined by their test result during the first quarter examination S.Y. 2018-2019. The least mastered competencies which were revealed in the test were also subjected in the utilization of digital learning tools. Challenges on the integration of digital learning tools in the select lessons in Animation were also identified.

The descriptive method of research was used in this study with the questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument. Thirty (30) Grade 11 – TVL-ICT students served as respondents of the study. Focus group discussion was also used to validate their responses.

Based from the test results, majority of the learners find difficulty in the topic of producing cleaned-up and in-betweened drawings. The learning competencies covered from the topics revealed to be nearing to mastery. Preparing the requirements for in-between drawings, applying design standards in producing in-between drawing, determining the similarities and differences between the clean-up and in-between drawings and creating drawings following the details of exposure sheets were the identified least mastered.

Relative to the utilization of digital learning tools in the lessons, the respondents were very honest when they responded that application of digital learning tools was very effective in stimulating their interests as well as very helpful in understanding the concepts in animation. With this creative tool their designing and drawing skills are being enhanced. They also believed that application of the said tool helped them to create their own designs, apply higher order thinking skills, and critique their own and others’ creations. It was also revealed that technology has the ability to encourage collaboration among students. However, they were also very vocal when they responded that school has “insufficient infrastructure” for deploying technology in the classroom, such as lack of reliable internet access and connected devices and gadgets.

The proposed offline-based platform with an integration of digital learning approach in teaching different lessons in animation can be an effective tool to further improve the students’ level of performance. With this effort, new environment will be introduced to the students who are considered 21st century learners. Since fresh and new activities will be taught to students, it will promote a more enjoyable and fun learning environment in which the students can feel more sense of ownership as they take their journey in a digital world.
