Teaching is a way of life. It is important that teachers like what they do –surrounded with young people with different characteristics, different abilities, different capabilities who comes from different walks of life; to be patient of anyone or anything that may distract their role as a teacher.
Teaching is a possession. It is valuable that teachers possess what they teach – mastery of the subject and the dignity of an educator that can be exemplified in action, words and manners. Without these, educating the young minds will be futile.
Teaching is a program. It is a line-up of activities and procedures to help students learn. Below are some principles that may guide your teaching experiences.
Be Prepared. According to Gail Godwin, “Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths theatre”. The most important way to provide good teaching is to be prepared for each and every class. It may be tiresome to prepare but being caught unprepared will create an uneasy feeling for the teacher in class and uncertainty for the learners knowing the teacher is not ready with the lesson. Being prepared by knowing the subject, having the visuals, and keeping the class in order will create a logical and consistent learning experience.
Know the Subject. Sharing what you know is most enjoyable. There is no pretense in knowing the lesson, it shows on how you execute that can be easily transferred to the students.
Know the Students. It is important to know your students beyond their names and addresses. Creating a personal relationship with them will help in preparing sensitive lessons aside from the consideration in situations that may hinder their education. Remember a teacher is a child’s second parent. Thus as we teach we also mold the whole being of our students in preparation for their good future.
Individualization. Learners must be treated individually. There are individual differences. Hence, it is necessary to plan and consider the levels on how students learn.
Students’ Participation. An important part of the learning process is expressing individual opinions and receiving feedback about these opinions. Encouraging students to participate can be difficult at times. There are a lot of teaching approaches and strategies given by educators yet careful planning is still important to encourage students to join in discussions either individually, with a partner or with a group. There are learners who require constant assistance or tend to be shy but with peers they are at ease to join in the various classroom activities. At this point emphasis is given to careful planning of activities and precise choosing of materials are important factors that contribute to a lively class interaction.
Teaching Materials. Curriculum is designed to be in congruence with changing times that affects the manner of educating the young people. As a teacher we open up to the changes seen and experienced. Meaning, same subject matters can be taught and learned in different ways. Recreate materials. The material should be taught in such a way that students will be able to relate with and apply to his or her life. For example, utilize current events to illustrate important concepts and ideas. By discussing information that is in the news and relating such information to the subject matter often maintain interest and are able to see how the concepts operate in a real setting.
Use Technology. Employ technology in presenting lessons. Surf the internet to make presentations to convey ideas. Create a virtual classroom environment. Learners now-a-days tend to be more attached with gadgets and become humanized technologies wanting everything to be in short cuts. Education is made easy with the skill of using gadgets but remember to maintain its positive use. Learning the how’s and the why’s are better and more complete than knowing the simple what, when and where.
Students take Action. The use of activity-based teaching is another way to develop good understanding of a topic that creates opportunities for him or her to act rather than to merely read a book or listen to the teacher. To do this, incorporate and simplify activities. Let students know what is expected of them after the lesson. For example, at the beginning of a lesson give the expected output like a drama, they not only present a written script but act out the script with the lessons in grammar included in the output.
Change is Good, Provide a quality teaching environment, an educator should be willing to change the way he or she teaches. Be open to change and constantly try to evaluate the lessons taught and the strategies used with the goal of improving the teaching environment. In addition try to vary the materials presented to students on a day-to-day basis. It is productive to use the lecture style day after day but try to vary the mode of teaching, for example, the blackboard on one day, slidex the next day, and viewing instruction on the third day.
Fair Learning. It is important that students act responsibly to learn and to meet high standards inside the classroom. At the same time, we must be fair to all students. To achieve this goal you may require students to adhere to deadlines, that they produce quality work, and that they act responsibly in their interactions with one another and with their teacher. In addition, be fair to all students by being impartial in grading and interacting with students. Treat them with respect.
Learning is Fun. The most fulfilling facet of teaching is the feeling of joy when students “get it”. Students also seem to express a similar sense of joy or happiness when they are able to get it on something that we are teaching. In general, learning is something that is supposed to be fun for all. It is important to think that the best way to learn is to make the topic enjoyable and to create an environment in which students can have a good time while they learn. So try to inject not only humor in lectures and discussions but also make projects fun and enjoyable. Inculcate in their hearts that learning is a way of life.
