ABSTRACT

This descriptive research determined the enhancement on pupils’ vocabulary mastery using Total Physical Response (TPR) Method. It explored the level of the pupils’ behaviors in teaching-learning process while using TPR method, teachers’ perception of the TPR method in terms of use and purpose, effectiveness and motivation, pupils’ vocabulary mastery with regards to verbs and commands, and the difference between the Pre-Test and Post-Test scores of the pupils.

The statistical used were weighted mean, standard deviation, and t-test. It was highly observed that the pupils are interested and enthusiastic, participative in class, relating word with action, more confident, developed sharper memory, having fun, and more active in class. Grade one teachers perceived TPR method with regards to use and purpose, effectiveness, and motivation as very effective. Pupils’ vocabulary mastery performance in terms of verbs and commands were less satisfactory in their pre-test and improved in their posttest as very satisfactory. Total Physical Response (TPR) method improves pupils’ behavior when it is used as teaching strategy in teaching vocabulary. Teachers have positive feedback regarding TPR method, it is regarded as an effective method in teaching vocabulary. It also has significant effect in pupils’ vocabulary mastery in terms of verbs and command. There is also a significant difference between the Pre-Test and Post Test scores of pupils.

Total Physical Response (TPR) method should be a regular part of class vocabulary activity as it observably refines pupils’ behavior when it is used as teaching strategy and teachers considered it as an effective method in teaching vocabulary. It is vital to expose pupils with increased number of action words such as verbs and commands with the utilization of different tools like stories, songs, games, and activities to further enhance their vocabulary skills and eventually their comprehension skills. School may use Total Physical Response (TPR) method as intervention and guidelines in formulating and implementing a school project targeting vocabulary mastery with the use of the researcher proposed action stories which served as the input in this study.
