TEACHING COMPETENCIES OF BNHS FILIPINO TEACHERS: INPUT TO IN-SERVICE

ABSTRACT

Teaching has a constantly changing face. It provides individuals with the opportunity of being of service to humankind, and this, to some, is strong motivation when the time comes for choosing their life’s work. The professional qualities of an effective teacher as basic qualities that have definite relationship to teaching competencies are: masters the subject-field one teaches, understands the learner, understands principles and skills in the use of techniques for their implementation, and understands either branches of knowledge, and understand and appreciate of the teaching profession.

In the entire observation of the researcher in teaching, most of the teachers are lack of competencies in practicing their teaching profession. There is a big difference of a teacher who is equipped not only with knowledge, but also skills in terms of teaching, managing, guiding, and evaluating than to a teacher who doesn’t grow by her profession.

The descriptive method of research was used and a survey- questionnaire as the most important tool in research was used by the researcher in gathering a much more needed data. Filipino teachers are the primary respondents of this study.

The researcher concluded that the variables on demographic profile and the teaching competencies of the teachers are significantly related with one another. 

 Therefore, the teacher must have the opportunity for a professional development like an operational plan for in-service training program. This is to intensify the teaching performance of the teachers that would benefit the students the most. The following are the drawn recommendations of the researcher: The Filipino teachers are the ones who think, design, and perform their own style of teaching. 

In addition, they have different ways on how to make lessons enjoyable to learn; The researcher recommends that the Filipino teachers should always initiate and present new styles, ideas, and techniques in teaching the subject in order for the students to be properly motivated; Teachers can reasonably accommodate most student needs after analyzing student learning needs and the demands of the instructional environment. In fact, the adaptations made for a specific student’s learning needs may be beneficial to many students. Adaptations are simply good teaching techniques if the teacher may put these into practice; and The use of the operational inset program for the teachers is a useful initiative to help the teachers professionally and personally because in the end, the students would benefit the most.
