Students’ Perceptions on Factors Affecting English

Purpose: The study aimed to identify the factors affecting the English communicative performance of Grade 10 students and determine the students’ perceptions with the end view of proposing activities to enhance the English communicative performance of students.

Design/Methodology: The quantitative and qualitative methods of research were utilized to find out the perceptions of Grade 10 students on the factors that affect their English communicative performance. The survey questionnaire, interview and focused group discussion were used to gather data.

Findings: The study revealed that the factors affecting the English communicative performance of Grade 10 students were lacking of self-confidence, getting intimidated when committing mistakes in English language, and finding ease to speak up using Filipino language rather than English expressions. Other factors were having difficulty to construct phrases and sentences and the disturbance made by the classmates. With this, the proposed activities were designed to enhance the English communicative performance of Grade 10 students.

Research Limitations: The participants in this research were limited to the 20 Grade 10-Narra students in Bigain National High School, S.Y. 2019-2020.

Originality/Value: The study will be beneficial to high school students for them to receive quality education, English teachers to thrive for more effective teaching techniques, and curriculum developers to formulate a better language learning program.
