ABSTRACT
One important trend that is backed up by a wide array of literature which holds a promise of enhancing students’ oral communication competence by providing technology-guided learning opportunities is Artificial Intelligence or AI. This research aimed to assess and validate the effectiveness of revolutionizing oral communication competence through AI. Using mixed-methods type of research, quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed and interpreted to validate data-driven findings. The research included 10 learners who were purposely selected for this study. Quantitative data were collected from the rubric assessment for oral test and researcher-made questionnaire for learners’ perceptions on AI. Pre and Post test results showed considerable changes from Emerging and Developing to Proficient and Mastered communicators with 3.86 % increase in their proficiency. As for the perceptions of the learners in the use of AI in improving their oral communication competence, the five indicators got an average weighted mean of 3.58 which was verbally interpreted as Absolutely agree. Using narrative analysis, qualitative data were derived from the loosely structured interview and from the observation made by the researcher during the use of SmallTalk2.me application. The core narrative revealed that respondents agreed that AI application has improved their oral communication competence and boost their confidence. However, they also voiced out that teachers’ guidance and human interactions are still the most essential elements in improving their communicative competence. These findings pose a significant perspective as to the benefits of Artificial Intelligence but there are still some areas that need to be explored. Finally, further research will be needed to highlight the relevance of a balanced approach that maximizes the advantages of the integration of Artificial intelligence in teaching and learning activities while taking into consideration human interactions.
