ABSTRACT
The Philippines’ educational system demands to increase its assistance to teachers, especially those with chronic conditions. Long-term diseases significantly impact them, which is crucial as establishing their functional capacity may be impaired. The central purpose of this research is to comprehensively analyze and explain the work efficiency and coping mechanisms of teachers with cancer, along with their insights into resiliency. The design utilized was a single explanatory case study, wherein data triangulation was employed with the support of semi-structured interviews, covert observation, and documentary investigation, interpreted using thematic analysis. Based on the responses, their circumstances assisted the subjects in understanding coping mechanisms and how to handle various work-related situations. The emerging concept of work efficiency indicated that they try to work smarter instead of overexerting themselves. Despite having cancer, their school performances ranged from very satisfactory to outstanding. Furthermore, as recovery and adjustment take an adequate period, the teachers strive to harmonize their life in the personal and professional aspects. Adapting to their condition enhances their productivity and efficiency in their careers. The essence of resiliency is a valuable alternative for intervention, as it signifies the potential to overcome adversity, which enables them to become more rigorous in their working environment. Consequently, the outcomes reaffirm national government and the educational system in the Philippines necessitate expanding the attention and medical support provided to employees, particularly those with chronic illnesses. It is recommended to enable the school community to gain more comprehensive knowledge of a teacher’s struggles and establish essential interventions and curriculum strategies.
