Remedial Reading: An Effective Intervention

Remedial instruction is one way to describe quality program for the learners who are not fully endowed with intellectual capacity.

Learners differ in their ability to learn. The bright ones are capable of achieving learning tasks successfully at much shorter time unlike the slow learners who cannot easily adjust to their environment, develop their own strengths and overcome their weaknesses.

In fact, low academic performance is a threat towards successful endeavor that’s why educators should strive to improve the curricular and co-curricular programs of their school so that the educational needs of every learner will be adequately met.

As one of the effective interventions, Linamanan Elementary School has been conducting remedial reading in order to develop the comprehension skills of the pupils which they can apply in all subject areas. It is included in the School Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) entitled “ Project ERA (Enhancing Reading Ability– A one O’clock Reading Habit.

During the remedial program, the learners are paired with teachers who really understand their learning needs. They can make progress because of collaborative efforts through multiple channels to master the desired competencies.

In order to refine the result of PHIL-IRI, we have used different approaches such as Fuller approach, Drop Everything and Read (DEAR), Marungko approach, phonemic awareness, Reading aloud, and other reading strategies with appropriate instructional materials.

Zenaida D. Cristobal, our former cluster encouraged us to consider the diversity among our clienteles and she inspired us to serve as an exemplars in the academe.

Being remedial reading teachers, we have committed to uphold the DepEd’s vision and mission by making a difference in the lives of the diverse learners equipped with 21st century skills.
