ABSTRACT

The action research aims to identify if there is a relationship between reading comprehension and problem solving skills of selected Grade 10 students in Jose P. Laurel High School. Specifically, the action research sought to 1) Identify the mean score of the respondents regarding their reading comprehension skills 2) identify the relationship between reading comprehension and problem solving skills. 3)establish awareness on both students and teachers regarding mathematical and reading ability 4) improve the teaching strategy to enhance students’ mathematical skill. The study was conducted from January 2020 to April 2020 with 46 students as target subjects. The study made use of Phil-IRI as a classroom-based assessment tool that aims to measure and describe the learners’ reading performance in both English and Filipino languages in oral reading, silent reading and listening comprehension. The findings showed that there is a significant relationship between reading comprehension skills and problem solving skills using the Pearson-R correlation. The mean of the group in the reading comprehension 20-item test, which is 13.24 shows that the respondents are average in terms of comprehension. A mean of 13.70 from the 20-item problem solving test shows that the respondents are average in problem solving. A pears0n-r value of 0.128 shows that there is a significant relationship between the two skills. The higher the score in the first, the higher the possibility of the score in the other to be high. The lower the score in the first, the higher the possibility of the score in the other to be low. As to recommendations, it is highly recommended that teachers should not only focus on the ability of students to read but also their ability to understand and comprehend on what they are reading.
