ABSTRACT

Reading comprehension is the process by which we comprehend the texts we read. It is why the task is important, why we teach it, and why we value it. The previous studies analyzed the programs and strategies for enhancing students' reading comprehension. However, this study focuses only on identifying the reading comprehension levels of Grade 7 students through the Phil IRI pretest and determining the reading difficulties encountered based on the reading miscue inventory and the student's reading behavior. It also identifies the secondary school reading programs implemented for the school year.

This research adopted a mixed-method approach for both quantitative and qualitative research designs. Part 1 of the research objective utilized the quantitative-descriptive survey approach as its research strategy for data gathering. It aims to identify the reading comprehension level of Grade 7 Junior High school students based on the PHIL IRI pretest results in independent, instructional, and frustration levels. However, Part II of the research objective utilized qualitative research using document analysis since it discusses the reading miscue inventory of the PHIL IRI pretest results. The Grade 7 total population tested is 2,942 from the eleven (11) Legazpi City Division secondary schools. The researcher also conducted interview in identifying the reading programs implemented in schools.

The results highlight that diagnosing reading problems as soon as possible is essential to implement corrective measures and early education. All stakeholders must work together to strengthen the school's reading program and the student's reading proficiency. Intervention programs or balanced reading techniques must be strictly monitored and followed up. According to the results, teachers must focus on helping students increase their reading levels. Reading comprehension should be actively pursued so that there are no non-readers by completing the student's year after school.
