NEW NORMAL AND BEYOND: A LEARNING AND TEACHING INNOVATION FOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study was created to discover the different learning and teaching innovations of the senior high school students of STI College Balayan INC. in the new normal and beyond. Learning and teaching methods changed during the two-year pandemic. With the quarantine at its end, STI College Balayan has developed new learning and teaching styles. The study used mixed-method, and qualitative and quantitative data was collected through survey questionnaires and unstructured interviews. 43 senior high school students from different strands, 15% of the strand population answered the survey, and eight (respondents were senior high school teachers who answered the unstructured interview. Results show the factors that affected the students’ academic and interpersonal lives during and after the quarantine, which were uncomfortable learning environments, social media influence, performance pressure, and face-to-face interactions. Major differences in the daily lives of students in terms of their school activity, social life, and personal behavior as they enter the new normal, in which they strongly agree with the statements. Ways how the students overcame the challenges they experienced in the new normal and beyond; results show they always observed improvement in all aspects. And the changes in teaching strategies of teachers. Based on the evidence drawn from this research, implications of the learning and teaching innovations, new teaching strategies applicable to different strands, and recommendations on learning styles and teaching styles are proposed.
