ABSTRACT

The recent result of Grade 8 Reading Pre - Assessment in Pinagkawitan Integrated National High School reveals that 41% of the grade 8 learners are categorized as readers under the frustration level., 31% for the instructional level and 28 % for the independent level. This tells that most of the learners scored below average in the conducted pre- test. This is relatively a low performance as many students were categorized into frustration level. Very few were found to be either instructional or independent readers. Hence, the target percentage which is 75% is not yet attained.

The research is conducted to determine the reading comprehension skills of the learners. She is prompted to conduct a needs analysis on reading comprehension skills of the grade 8 learners in Pinagkawitan Integrated National High School. The findings of this study revealed the difficulties encountered by the students and Reading Comprehension Level have high significant relationships in terms of skimming, scanning, summarizing, making inference, and sequencing. Hence, the extent of the students’ reading difficulty in terms of the reading comprehension skills such as skimming; scanning; making inferences; summarizing and sequencing suggest their needs in order to develop and enhance reading comprehension skills and advance from being frustration readers to either instructional or independent readers. There is a need to reinforce the use of skimming scanning technique in enhancing the reading comprehension skills of the students. Meanwhile, making inferences, summarizing and sequencing need to have been improved and developed. Thus, activities that would contribute to developing such comprehension skills should be employed in instruction.
