ABSTRACT
The study determined the relation of Multiple Intelligences to National Career Assessment Examination Result and to academic performance of fourth year high school students of Tagaytay City Science National High School, Academic Year 2013-2014. Specifically, this study aimed to: describe the participants’ socio demographic characteristics in terms of age, sex, monthly family income, occupation of father, occupation of mother, birth order, and type of elementary school graduated; determine participants’ level of academic performance; the strength of the participants’ Multiple Intelligences; the strength among student participants as reflected in the result of National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE); the relationship between the participants’ socio-demographic characteristics and their Multiple Intelligences; the relationship between the participants socio-demographic characteristics and their NCAE performance; the relationship between the participants socio-demographic characteristics and academic performance; the relationship between the participants’ Multiple Intelligences and their NCAE performance; the relationship between the participants’ Multiple Intelligences and their academic performance; and the relationship between the participants’ NCAE performance and their academic performance.
The descriptive-correlational design was utilized in this study. Four hundred ninety three (493) fourth year high school students of Tagaytay City Science National High School under the Basic Education Curriculum were the participants of this study. To collect data, the researcher utilized questionnaires. For data analysis, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Point Biserial Correlation Coefficient and Chi-Square were used.
Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: Most of the fourth year high school students of Tagaytay City Science National High School are in the right age for their year level. Male participants outnumber the female participants. Majority of the participants’ families earn low monthly family income. Most of the participants are graduates of a public elementary school. Majority of the participants’ mothers are unemployed and their fathers belong to the group of non-professional in occupation, and high percentages of the participants are middle born. The area of strength of the participants in Multiple Intelligences is in musical intelligence. The area of strength of the participants in National Career Assessment Examination is in verbal ability which has the ability to excel in grammatical rules and local arrangement of ideas. The participants’ level of academic performance is satisfactory. Age is not an indicator of any variation in their multiple intelligences because the participants belong to the same age level. Male are the stronger sex in terms of mathematical ability and bodily kinesthetic. Family income does not have any effect on their multiple intelligences. Types of elementary school were the participants graduated from do not have any effect on their multiple intelligences. Participants whose mothers are professionals tend to be intrapersonal while those who are non-professional and unemployed are inclined to musical intelligence. Birth order has no effect on the multiple intelligences of the participants. The more mature the participants are, the more they become better in scientific ability, reading comprehension, verbal ability, clerical ability and non-verbal ability. Female participants have higher NCAE performance than male participants in reading comprehension, verbal ability, mathematical ability, clerical ability, non-verbal ability and logical reasoning ability. Those who graduated from private elementary schools have higher standard score in NCAE than the participants who graduated from public elementary schools. Participants who belong to high family income perform better in all areas of NCAE. Those whose mothers are unemployed have the potential to make sound inference, synthesis, generalization, or conclusions on what they read; have high sense of mathematical calculus; requisite skills for secretarial job; and ability to understand and analyze complex written material. Those with non-professional fathers have high standard score in verbal ability. First born participants get a high score in scientific ability. Younger participants perform better in all subject areas except for edukasyon sa pagpapahalaga. Generally, female participants get higher academic performance than male participants. Participants who graduated from private elementary school get higher academic performance than those who graduated from public elementary school. Participants who got very satisfactory in academic performance are those who belong to middle monthly family income. Participants whose mothers are unemployed have a very satisfactory in academic performance in English, Math and Araling Panlipunan. First borns get very satisfactory in their academic performance in English, Technology and Livelihood Education and Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health. Multiple intelligences is not a basis for their NCAE performance. Multiple intelligences is not a basis for their academic performance. The average grade per subject area and grade point average can be a predictor of NCAE performance.
The following are hereby recommended by the researcher: school administrators may implement programs and activities that will enhance participants’ musical and bodily kinesthetic intelligence in their co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Teachers may use music as teaching strategy and technique that will motivate the students to improve their academic performance. Otherwise, they may also conduct remedial classes to improve student participants’ academic performance like in mathematics. Curriculum makers may improve the program in Edukasyon sa Pagpapahalaga/Pagpapakatao. They may include different activities that may enhance participants’ inclination to existential intelligence. They may also add number of hours in teaching the subject. Guidance counselors can provide information-related guidance services that will encourage the students in discovering their intelligences for their academic success. The school administrators of the public elementary schools may take into consideration the manageable class size, so that the teachers can cater to the needs of the students individually to improve the students’ performance in academic and NCAE. Students may also consider their academic performance in choosing their course in college. Future researchers may conduct similar studies in other population to validate the results of the present study on Multiple Intelligences, National Career Assessment Examination and academic performance of the fourth year high school students.
