ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the effects of Integrating Social Learning in teaching Electrical Subject for the enhancement of the students’ academic performance. This study purports to establish that Social Learning can be used as a strategy in teaching the students in K to 12 Program particularly in TLE Junior High School.

A total of forty-two (42) students were the respondents of the study. They were the class who obtained the lowest mastery level in electrical subject during their 9th Grade. The respondents answered the pre-test before the Social Learning Strategy and Post-test after the Social Learning Strategy.

Result revealed that prior to the experiment proper, the students lack the necessary skills covered in this study. The pre – test performance of the students who participated in this study was found to be in the developing level. The pre-experimental group then took the post-test. It was revealed that the post – test performance of the students may be described to be in a status wherein they are meeting the expectations of their electrical subject.

In addition, it was revealed that there is a significant difference between the pre – test and post – test performances of students after they were exposed to Social Learning Strategy. Lastly, the mean learning gain of the students was found to be 31.70 which is interpreted as Fair.

Based on the findings, it was revealed that Social Learning Strategy can be used as one of the effective strategies that can enhance students’ academic performance in understanding the Electrical Subject. This can be adopted by the teachers in the Junior High School, as well as the teachers in the Senior High School level to become locally and globally competitive citizens in the world.

INTRODUCTION

Student retention has been and is still one of the serious areas of discussion in higher education all over the world (Berge and Huang 2004, 1). In teaching, teachers ponder on a wide array of strategies, manners, styles and method that will best suit their students.

The need for improving the performance of the students towards Electrical Subject is reflected on their poor achievement in the said area. This is firmly supported by their previous Mean Percentage Score during their Grade 9 prerequisites set in Electrical Subject; records reveal that their Mean Percentage Score during School year 2019 – 2020 is 31.28%. They only reflect a Mastery Level description of Low Mastery. Hence, it can be concluded from the data that majority of the Grade 9 Electrical students have difficulty in learning Electrical subject. Generally, this low achievement is a manifestation of low quality of learning among the students.

These factors greatly influenced the researcher to conduct the study to determine the strategy in teaching. Specifically, in the area of teaching the Electrical subject which would require a lot of technical terminologies and mathematical concepts and solutions wherein retention plays a very crucial, pertinent relevant role in the achievement of learning.

Electricity is frequently studied by hopeful electricians or device technicians. Electrical courses are accessible at community and technical colleges as part of the requirements for certificate and associate degree programs in electrical maintenance, instrumentation technology. Those who want to be electricians may also acquire about electricity during internship programs, which include both formal classroom lessons and hands-on training.

Electrical Installation and Maintenance is one of the specific subjects under the Technical-Vocational Livelihood (TVL) track. It contains Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies (PECS), Environment and Market, Tools and Equipment, Electrical Materials, Mensuration and Calculation, Technical Drawings and Plans, Occupational Health and Safety Procedure, Electric and Hydraulic Tools, Electrical Lighting System, Auxiliary Outlets and Lighting Fixtures and Wiring Devices and ground fault current interrupting outlets.

The Electrical Installation and Maintenance is part of the Technical-Vocational track under industrial art. The students are focused with analyzing signs, electrical symbols and data, interpretation of technical drawings and plans, maintaining of electric hydraulic tools, installation of electric metallic tubing, wire ways and cable trays; cable Bridge, installing telephone terminal cabinet. And also, the selection of wiring devices used for floor and ground fault current interrupter which is based from the Philippine Electrical Code standards.
