ABSTRACT

Reading is one of the macro skills that every learner has to develop. The Philippine educational system highly emphasized its aspiration of making every learner a reader. Many reading program interventions were launched for it to achieve its dream of making every Filipino functionally literate. Inevitably, reading cannot be deviated from meaningful learning experience.

This study aimed to find out the reading readiness of the selected grade 2 pupils of Agnas Elementary School. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: (1) what is the performance of the selected grade 2 pupils in the pre-test along (a) reading accuracy and (b) comprehension? (2) what is the performance of the selected grade 2 pupils in the post-test on the above-mentioned variables? and (3) is there a significant difference on the performance of the selected grade 2 pupils in the pre and post-test on the above-mentioned variables?

The researcher employed an experimental research approach through pre-post test design. Twenty (20) grade pupils were selected as subjects of the study. The researcher used 30-item teacher-made test in order to measure the reading competency performance of grade 2 pupils along reading accuracy and comprehension.

It has found out that during the pre and post tests, reading accuracy has a direct relationship with reading comprehension. The pre-test result revealed that reading accuracy has a performance level of 45.00 falling to a Low Mastery description while reading comprehension it a No Mastery description with 39.33 performance level. In the post-test, reading accuracy and comprehension obtained a performance level of 75.00 and 70.00 respectively with respective descriptions as Mastery and Near Mastery.

The computed mean for the pre-test was 12.51 while 21.81 was for the post-test having mean difference of 9.31. Their respective variances were 1.95 and 5.01. The date obtained a computed T- value of 17.26 which is greater than the critical value of + 1.72. Hence, there is a significant difference on the performance of the grade pupils along the identified reading competencies during the pre and post tests.

The results showed that reading intervention through games and multi-media aided instructions are among the effective ways of promoting reading readiness among the pupils. The interventions provided are worth sharing. It is very essential to develop reading accuracy among learners for it has a direct impact on comprehension. The higher the reading accuracy competency, the higher the reading comprehension will be.
