“GROW SEED, THE GREEN

SIDE OF COVID-19”

LEIGH LOUISE M. GARCIA

Coronavirus Disease 2019 or commonly known as covid-19, is an unexpected occurrence that terrorized the entire world without breaking a sweat. This unbeatable opponent caused thousands of deaths, economic breakdown, and unemployment that eventually turned into starvation. It is now deepening the hunger crisis and creating new grounds of hunger across the globe. One way to fight against starvation is to grow our food in our home. It is easy, convenient, and usually done outside.

Planting vegetables in our garden sometimes a bit of a hassle because of the time and effort we put waiting until we harvest our crops. It is the impatience and lack of effort we possess that make this beautiful chore a struggle. We sometimes prefer to lay down in bed, surf the net, and wait for the food to be served. Little do we know that this task has a lot of benefits to us during this pandemic?

One benefit of growing our crops is that we enjoy organic and fresh foods free from chemical fertilizers. Vegetables we buy in the market sometimes sprayed with pesticides and insecticides that are harmful to the human health. Some of its health effects are rashes, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea or worst case is death. By planting our own food, we are guaranteed that what we eat is chemical-free. This is good way to keep us strong where health in this situation is considered precious.

Keeping ourselves active is also an advantage this wonderful piece of work can give us. Since this is usually done outside, we are ensured that we discharge a good amount of sweat to make our body stay detoxify. This is a struggle to the most of us because we are detained in our own house, unable to work physically because of the bounded space surrounding us.

The duty of growing our food will surely be a sword to fight against starvation and a shield that will protect us against Covid-19. Usually, the color green is associated with the color of nature, but it is also has a strong emotional correspondence to safety. So basically, Nature will keep us safe and sound because it is the green side of covid-19, the hope that keeps us alive during this environmental catastrophe.
