Abstract

Academic performance is the outcome of education; it is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals. This study was conducted to determine the factors that affect the academic achievement of the senior high school students which may consequently help in the improvement of the students and teachers alike. This study may benefit the students by allowing them to understand better the factors that can affect their academic performance. The Grade 12 Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) students assessed very good based on their scholastic average. There is a clear evidence that a teacher’s ability and effectiveness are the most influential determinants of student achievement. Regardless of the resources that are provided, rules that are adopted and curriculum that is revised, the primary source of learning for students remains the classroom teacher. The level of preparation and learning strategies developed and employed consciously by students, go a long way to influence their level of academic performance. How a student takes his or her studies, greatly determines his/her level of academic achievements. Home related factors has been found out to have only a minimal influence on the academic performance of ABM students. This is due to the fact that parents and home’s effect is not the sole determinant of students’ academic outcome. The students’ academic achievement was significantly correlated with satisfaction with academic environment which is the school.
