ABSTRACT

Parents have always played a crucial role in their children’s emotional and intellectual development. They serve as their children’s first teachers, and give them the stepping stones they need to adapt to life in school.

The research aims to determine parental level of support and factors affecting the implementation of modular distance learning modality to the increased performance level of learners.

Forty- three (43) pupils’ parents are randomly selected to serve as the subjects of the study. Record of their attendance in different activities as compiled by class advisers and those of school records were gathered together and were carefully studied. Survey checklist and questionnaire, focus group discussion (FGD) and interview among respondents also testified to the validity of the study. The following are the results of the study: majority of the parents are in their high school level and they are part time in teaching their children at home. Majority of the parents always support their children in their studies in the implementation of modular distance learning modality. Most of the parents disagree on the factors affecting their support in the implementation of modular distance learning modality. The plan of activities to enhance parental support in the implementation of modular distance learning modality.

I. Context and Rationale

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the subsequent closure of schools, it became apparent that parents had to assume the full-time role of educating their children and support their learning virtually. Parents who have been considered as one of the stakeholders of the school community play a tremendous role in the child’s educational and environmental transformation. Thus, the children’s achievement rely on the partnership of parents, teachers and other family and community members who are working together to encourage and support them.

Parents have to support their children’s involvement in all school’s activities. They have to guide and assist them in all their undertakings in school. Attendance in all school meetings virtually, distribution of modules and retrieval of their child’s outputs and all other school activities help develop self-confidence in their children Through these, their children will realize that their parents value them above other things and that will encourage them to excel in everything they do just so their parents will always be proud of them in their achievements.

In line with the Republic Act 9155 or the Governance of Basic Education Act of 2001 provides the guiding principle that the parents and community shall be encourage for active involvement in the child’s education. The participation and coordination between and among schools must be maximized towards improved performance.

In accordance with its legal mandate, DepEd promulgated DepEd Order No. 012,s. 2020, The Adoption of the Basic Education-Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) for School Year 2020-2021 in Light of the COVID-19 Public Health  Emergency which  aims to ensure the health, safety and well-being of the learners, teachers and personnel in the time of COVId-19,while finding ways to continue amidst the crisis. Communications shall play a major role among administrators, teachers, parents and other stakeholders to support the new normal education.

The researchers aim to determine the level of parents’ involvement in modular distance learning. They found out varied and complicated tasks in terms of explaining and teaching their children the certain topics. Some say, they have no time for their children. Others say, they don’t know the lessons and topics being discussed in the module. Moreover, their children don’t want to listen them so they have to scold them. In addition, they say that their children’s learning is really affected of this pandemic and they believed that their children learned most in school with the teacher rather than having para teachers at home.

As teachers, the researchers observed that there are factors that influence a parents’ ability to actively contribute to a child’s learning in new normal. It is for this reason why the researcher became interested on the study about the parental involvement toward the learners’ academic performance in modular distance learning. However, the child’s attitude toward learning is the key element in uplifting the quality of education that we desire.

One of the major problems experienced by the teacher in modular distance learning in Mabini Central School, of course, would be the parental involvement to their children. Parents working from home will now have additional work — providing technical support or guidance in their schoolwork. It is difficult for working parents who have many kids to teach and do other tasks with modular distance learning. And considering that at most times, they spend time teaching their children up to midnight or during when they are off-duty. For parents who are illiterate, pupils need teaching support from the teacher same as for those children who experience family problem in this case, teachers should be considerate. Both teachers and parents will need strong partnership in raising kids with the school in teaching them necessary life skills.
