ABSTRACT

This study focused in the determinants on the reading performance in English of grade 7 students in Bilaran National High School, Nasugbu, Batangas. This study is composed of fifty (50) Grade 7 students utilizing descriptive quantitative method such as descriptive evaluative and descriptive comparative. The following findings were drawn from the study. Majority of the respondents agree on the determinants on the reading performance of students. Majority of the respondents agree on the importance of English curriculum as a helpful tool in English reading performance of students. There is a significant relationship between determinants on the reading performance of students and English Curriculum as a helpful tool in English reading performance of students. The action plan is designed by the researcher to enhance the reading performance of students.

CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Reading comprehension is a complex undertaking that involves many levels of processing. One of the most fundamental aspects of reading is the ability to deal with unfamiliar words encountered in the text. Readers who struggle with word-level tasks use up valuable cognitive space that could be allotted to deeper levels of text analysis. It is not enough to rely on context cues to predict the meaning of new words, since this strategy often results in erroneous or superficial understandings of key terms, especially in content-area reading. Mature readers need to possess a basic knowledge of “how words work” and a set of strategies for approaching new words encountered throughout the day.

There is a general consensus among researchers concerning instructional principles underlying effective word study. Rather than supporting memorization and a reliance on a narrow range of instructional strategies, current research calls for instruction that meets the needs of the diverse learners in each classroom, and that encourages higher level thinking about language. Applying these principles in classrooms is, however, challenging. These approaches rely upon teachers who have a deep knowledge base in language and who possess a range of instructional skills related to word study in reading, spelling, and vocabulary.

Teachers perform a valuable function when they model their own word-solving strategies with students in the form of think-aloud. This may take the form of learning the meaning of a new word they have read or heard spoken. It can also involve modeling strategies they use to spell a particularly difficult word. This is just one situation wherein the significance of reading competency has called the attention of the proponents as an interesting topic for their research.

This study would like to identify any significant improvement of the English program toward the reading ability of the students. The researcher would like to assess the significance of the new curriculum to the students reading development towards literacy now that Grade 7 has been introduced as the primary grade in high school. The researcher would like to explore on the reading assessments and learn how the program may help the high school students further.

Based on the given information, the researcher is motivated to conduct the study.
