COMPREHENSION SKILLS AT THE EMERGENCE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

ABSTRACT

The study aimed at addressing the comprehension skills of the secondary school students at Dacanlao Gregorio Agoncillo National High School during the school year 2024 – 2025. Using the descriptive research method, the researchers used quantitative approach and questionnaires as the main data-gathering instrument. Weighted mean and ranking were the statistical used. Results showed that the benefits of artificial intelligence on the increase in comprehension skills of secondary school students were to a high extent. The learning needs to enhance comprehension skills of students was to a high extent. The extent of performance of students in comprehension skills was to a slight extent. Intervention plan was recommended to enhance the comprehension skills of the students.

I. Context and Rationale

The emergence of Artificial Intelligence had an overwhelming effect on the failing aspect of comprehension skills of the students. Technology is a good choice for learning; yet, a bad influence in terms of the lethargy of the students to see comprehension as a significant factor in their reading fluency. They are becoming dependent on what it offers. As teachers do everything they can to uplift the learning development of the students, innovation and technology overpower them. This means that students are becoming more and more succumbed to fast-phase technology and becoming habituated to snap learning from various digital platforms. They delve into idleness to learn more. This leads to learning loss and poor comprehension.

Artificial Intelligence is an opportunity for optimization rather than a threat. It transforms educational practices, helps boost student engagement, improves learning outcomes, and addresses longstanding challenges in education. Likewise, it is seen as a transformative force in education. It is the key to the exploration of education and navigates the ethical, social, and practical implications of its integration into classrooms.

This scenario causes an epidemic of learning loss and poor communication leading to meager comprehension skills. In the academe, comprehension is indistinguishable from fluency. Students who have comprehension skills can read text, process it, and understand its meaning. The interconnectedness of word reading and language comprehension is the reliant aspect of comprehension. AI sheds light on the many benefits it has and even creates inclusivity and equity.

In a more universal advantage of AI, it is explained as a tool that plays a vital role in democratizing education. It makes global classrooms accessible to all, regardless of language barriers or physical impairments like hearing or visual impairments. It promotes equity and ensures all students have equal opportunities and thrive academically. Moreover, AI is like a robot that can offer solutions to students and their diverse needs. In a more common term, AI is a support system for students.

Comprehension, on the other hand, is the main topic of argument in the academe. Recent international reading results state poor or avalanche reading comprehension reporting that Filipino students have one of the weakest creative thinking skills in the world, Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) even mentioned that the students’ performance placed in the same score range as three other countries on the bottom: Albania, Uzbekistan, and Morocco (Chi, 2024).

What baffling in the aspect of comprehension is the uncompromising utilization of artificial intelligence. With a simple click, students can download the easiest answer to the questions. The technicality of generating answers to artificial intelligence like Chat GPT is a risk to learning success. Consequently, students, upon downloading answers from AI sources do not bother to read the content. Such a challenge caught the attention of the researchers and aimed to assess the comprehension skills of students
