COMPETENCY-BASED DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR INTERMEDIATE MATHEMATICS TEACHERS IN

DIVISION OF BATANGAS PROVINCE

Research Description: This study is about assessing the competencies of the intermediate mathematics teachers in public elementary schools in the Division of Batangas Province. Based on the findings, the researcher came with a competency-based development program.

INTRODUCTION

This study was grounded on the idea that human resource is the most vital resource of every organization. Thus, teachers’ quality also has impact on the performance of the educational institutions. Since studies about competencies of intermediate mathematics teachers are very limited, this paper may help school heads or academic administrators to utilize personal characteristics as well as to effectively manage institutional variables in a manner that can contribute in the professional development of the selected intermediate mathematics teachers in the Division of Batangas Province. With these thoughts in mind, this paper hopes to fill the gap found in the existing researches and literature on the competencies of the intermediate mathematics teachers in the Division of Batangas Province.

The descriptive mixed method of research was employed in the study. The respondents of the study included 357 intermediate mathematics teachers who were purposively chosen from the 609 public elementary schools in the Division Province of Batangas. Out of these respondents, 20 key informants were drawn for the interview and focus group discussion.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The data revealed that most of the respondents claimed moderate technological competencies, but claimed competent in terms of pedagogical and knowledge competencies.

A competency-based development program was developed for remediation of weak competencies and solutions to the problems encountered by the intermediate mathematics teachers in public elementary schools in the Division of Batangas Province.
