COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT TOOL: A SELF- ASSESSMENT RATING SCALE AND PROFICIENCY TEST MEASURING TEACHER’S COMPETENCY IN STATISTICS AND RESEARCH METHODS

Ma. Trixia Camille C. Jayme

This study investigated the level of teacher’s competency in statistics and research methods using the developed and validated competency assessment tool. The competency assessment tool composed of two parallel measures namely: Self-assessment rating scale, and Proficiency test. Descriptive and developmental method of research were utilized in this study, which focused on 286 senior high school teachers in the Division of Pasig City. The Principal Component Factor Analysis established a three-factor model with thirty-one item for both scale and proficiency test. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the three factors namely: statistical analysis; quantitative methods; understanding research problems. Overall, findings revealed that based on self-assessment rating scale teacher’s level of competency was found to be average in statistical analysis and quantitative methods, and above average in understanding research problem. However, based on proficiency test the level of competency was below average in statistical analysis and quantitative methods, and above average in understanding research problem.
