ASSESSING INSTRUCTIONAL COMPETENCE OF TEACHERS IN SAN PIRO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL: BASIS FOR ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to propose an enhancement program to ensure that one hundred percent (100%) of teachers receive proper technical assistance, instructional supervision and mentoring in improving their professional growth and development through attending LAC session, INSET training, Focus Group Discussion, mentoring and coaching, conducting action research and other trainings and seminars. It revealed that majority of the respondents are female, have the age of 26 to 30 years old bracket, and have been in the field for 6-10 year. Lastly, most of the respondents are Teacher III. It adheres to DepEd MATATAG Agenda four critical components, G-give support to teachers to teach better. This study was focused on the level of instructional competence of teachers based from the RPMS-PPST indicator as the basis for Project STREAMERS (STrengthened pRovision of tEchnical Assistance, Mentoring and coaching for teachERS). The design of this study was a quantitative- descriptive, that utilized a self-made questionnaire derived from RPMS-PPST Classroom Observable indicators. Respondents have assessed themselves on their proficiency level in the 9 classroom observable indicators using the likert scale.

It has been found out that the respondents’ proficiency in using a range of teaching strategies that enhance learner achievement in literacy and numeracy skills, is just above average. Their competence in adapting and using culturally appropriate teaching strategies to address the needs of learners from indigenous groups was just in average level. Thus, proposed enhancement program focusing on capacitating teachers’ instructional competence Project STREAMERS (STrengthened pRovision of tEchnical Assistance Mentoring and coaching for teachERS) was conceptualized to facilitate the continuous implementation wherein the results of the study will be the main goal to achieve.

It contains various activities to strengthen monitoring and supervision in teaching-learning processes, upskilling and reskilling of teachers in classroom observation indicators, and coaching and mentoring to teachers.
