ABSTRACT

As time goes by, renovating public markets play a vital aspect in urban revitalization. Renovating public markets improves community vitality, raises hygiene standards, strengthens local economies, and provides better facilities. The purpose of this research was to identify the issues regarding the public market of Balayan and renovate its architectural design.

Specifically, the problems within the Balayan public market addressed by this research paper are spatial aspect, operational efficiency, and architectural aspects. Upon evaluation, solutions for these problems are employing textured porcelain flooring of the wet market, employing clay roofing for insulation and wind resistance, and modifications of interior design of public market mall type. To compliment these, a temporary wet market was designed to accommodate to the vendors who are to be affected by the desired changes for the public market. This temporary building has a second floor that will be utilized as a parking lot, additionally, after the renovation of public market, which will result into the return of vendors to their previous occupation, the first floor of the temporary building will also be converted into a parking lot. Also, this building is located roughly 200 meters south-east from the public market.

To envision these solutions, prototype building was created for the public market, and a 3d model was created for the temporary building. The prototype of the public market shows the desired architectural design of the researchers to address and lessen the problems experienced by the vendors and customers. This illustrates how renovated public markets can better serve changing consumer demands while fostering the local economy. The 3d model of the temporary building shows the desired physical appearance of the infrastructure. Overall, the study emphasizes how architecture may be used to create environments that are accessible, inclusive, and culturally relevant while meeting a variety of community needs.
