ABSTRACT

Assisting learners during educational disruption has been a challenge not only to teachers but to parents as well. Learning English during the pandemic has posed a bigger challenge since the pandemic postured a quintessential transformative challenge to the educational sector.

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Oplan PAPASA in the English academic performance of the Grade 5 pupils of General Roxas Elementary School for the School Year (SY) 2021-2022. This study employed a mixed method research (MMR) design. Mixed methods research is a form of research in which a novice researcher can combine elements of both qualitative and quantitative approaches.

In the study, the perusal of qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, viewpoints, and inference strategies to serve the purpose of the study has been done. The result and findings of the study showed that there was a significant improvement, after using Oplan PAPASA, in the pupils over- all English academic performance.

In terms of how the overall academic performance has been affected by Oplan PAPASA, the emerging theme was Inquiry-Based Guided Learning where pupils were given the opportunity to address what they wanted to know. Oplan PAPASA has created an opportunity for parents and guardians to play essential roles in improving the academic performance of learners in English 5.

The sudden shift to distance learning, indeed brought a lot of challenges among internal and external stakeholders. While the learners especially those found in elementary education struggled with the shift towards continuous learning amidst the pandemic, it was undeniable that both teachers and parents or guardians must work hand in hand to help and support learners.

Playing as the More Knowledgeable Others, the support system provided to these pupils, hence provided a positive result in terms of academic performance. As a recommendation, a collaborative workshop webinar have to be put in place so that additional support may be given to parents, guardians, and teachers as they adjust pedagogically to support learners.
