Analysis of the K-12 Immersion Praxis in the Philippines: A Basis for Curriculum Enhancement

KEIVE OZIA G. CASIMIRO

Last May 15, 2013 the Republic Act 10533 also known as the K to 12 Program was signed by the former President Benigno Aquino III. Many are asking these days why it is still hard for the graduates of the program to scout for a job that fits the strand that they chose to enroll. It has been 6 years since the program had started and many are still jobless and many find it difficult to adjust in collegiate level despite of the preparatory subjects, they did take during their Senior High School days.

There were so many who raised their sentiments about such, some were politicians who would like the program to be abolished, some were academic personnel who wished to have a better curriculum than the present. If we are to analyze, one factor that we must focus into is the immersion program of the students, the subject is actually offered during the 2nd semester of the 12th grade, the first lapse we will see are the number of subjects offered still during the period of deployment, if we are to compare such to the immersion program offered by CHED, it is very clear that there are lesser subjects offered so that the students can focus on their skills training. Unlike the program that we have in SHS, students will be having a hard time putting an equilibrium studying their academic subjects and immersing themselves to the training that requires competencies.

Another is the number of hours given, 80 hours is the minimum time given to those who will involve themselves to training, such is not enough to let the students cope with the competencies required by the curriculum so as with the demands asked by the real world of work. If curriculum experts were to analyze such, among the three divisions of the offering, the core, specialized and applied, there are some subjects that are offered and may be omitted in the matrix so that the program shall focus in giving trainings that are aligned to the need of the students.
