THREAD IN FABRIC MAKING

GRACIANA NABAT-NOFRE

· Volume III Issue III

ABSTRACT

Filipiniana attires make use of indigenous materials that are endemic to the Philippines. These materials are usually comprised of fruit fibers, grass, and palms; and are mixed with cotton to produce a fabric that can be made into a dress, shirt, or material for shoes, bags, and even furniture. This study explored using the Maguey, Pineapple, and Cotton that can be used as a material for Filipiniana attire. It also determined the acceptability of this fabric in terms of texture, durability, and appearance. This experimental-descriptive study took the fifteen dressmaking teachers' evaluations and another fifteen fashion designers on the three kinds of fabrics presented for this study. The Statistical tools employed were Weighted Mean, Frequency, Rank, and t Test for Two Independent Samples. According to this study's results, the texture of the 15/15/70 combination is better than the 20/10/70 and 25/5/70 varieties.

Moreover, this holds to the durability and appearance of the first type of fabric studied. The texture of the three materials studied appealed invariably to the teachers and designers. However, the perception of the teachers and designer’s variable differs in terms of their evaluation of the three fabric types' durability and appearance. The best quality of the fabric is the 15/15/70 combination. It means that slight processes and embellishments can be applied to improve the texture, durability, and appearance of the 15/15/70 variety. The teachers' comments and suggestions were limited to the overall acceptability of the 15/15/70 fabric.

On the other hand, the designers' suggestions were more specific, focusing on the texture, durability, and appearance of the first type of fabric to make it more viable for production. Moreover, the designers even suggested that the said type of material can be used for a different kind of clothing, not only limited to Filipiniana attire. Recommendations for the use of this fabric and its marketability are discussed.
