 ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STRUGGLING LEARNERS IN MUSIC, ARTS, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, AND HEALTH (MAPEH)

ABSTRACT

This article examines the academic performance of secondary schools students from the perspectives of grit and mindset through a detailed review of the literature. What makes a learner struggled? Willing to take on academic challenges? The research grit and mindset provides understanding of why many secondary students struggle academically. Whereas Duckworth discusses persistence and resilience. Dweck compares fixed versus growth and mindsets, the willingness to take on academic challenges and belief in oneself as a learner. Teaching strategies can help students increase persistence and build up a growth mindset are presented as keys to successfully affecting academic performance.

INTRODUCTION

Quality of instruction is the primary objective of every institution and every teacher. However, such is affected with the alternative of instructional materials, the methods and strategies applied in dispensing instruction, the approaches used, and the evaluative techniques utilized primarily by the teachers themselves. The educative program whether in the technique or contents of instruction is the essential element that influence the teaching-learning process. As such, it should be well-considered to pave the way for a better educational perspective. Education is considered imperative not only for the progress of the individuals but also for the development of the community and the nation in general. To beget about the total progress of the learner and an improvement in all aspects of the institution’s educational system of the institution, and therefore utilize modern and innovative techniques and methods, individuals need to generate awareness and enhance their educational skills. The main purpose of this research paper is to understand the academic performance of struggling learners in secondary schools in Ubay District II Bohol. In derivative schools, there are multiple components inside and outside the school that influences the academic performance of the students. The central the section that has been taken into consideration include an element that impacts the academic achievement of the learners, academic achievement and a large number of students, parental and associated factors relating to academic achievement, the contribution of school factors towards the educational attainment of the students, influence of indigence on academic achievement of students, and other causes of low academic achievement. Many factors may affect a student’s performance. One factor could be the approach or teaching style applied by the teacher in taking up a particular subject matter. Another could be the interest level of the student towards the lesson. An interested student is more motivated to listen and participate in the discussion than the less interested one. Whether the teacher likes it or not, checking the student’s prior knowledge as a springboard for discussing and providing a comprehensive background of the subject matter at hand can enhance the learning process and outcome, than simply giving at once the tasks to be done. Otherwise, the learning atmosphere, process, and outcome are significantly affected. Such is the problem met by the teacher-researcher in the school where he is assigned as there is a need to meticulously employ the appropriate approach and strategies in the teaching of MAPEH to the class of students the teacher-researcher handles. The indicators of academic performance of the students include class active participation, accomplished class assignments, homework assignments, tests, examinations, and oral participation in competitions or other events. The pressure of the parents and other individuals upon teachers and school administrators to improve academic performance has enabled schools to come up with advanced strategies. These include promoting extra- curricular classes for students, introducing effective and efficient teaching-learning methods and instructional strategies, using the advent of technology, rewarding intrinsically or extrinsically students for good performance which serves as a motivating factor when they achieve low grades, as students usually tend to work more to make improvements. When educators execute the plan of action for gratifying better performance, then they would be motivated to study and improve their academic performance. Secondary school students usually those belonging to upper-class families are significantly aware and affected as they aspire to have good career opportunities in the future. Since there has been no study conducted on this case in Ubay District II, then this study is made.

METHODOLOGY

The study used a Descriptive Quantitative Method. The researcher used one set of self-made questionnaires, which has 20 items. Coding was done after distributing a questionnaire to the respondents. The researcher distributed the questionnaire, gathered all data subject to statistical treatment to research, and interpret the premise for findings, conclusions, and documentary analysis were utilized based on the academic performance of the learners during first, second and, third grading period. The final was not included since it was affected by the pandemic.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

Presented in this chapter are the data gathered from the respondents pertaining to their profile, academic performance in MAPEH, and their responses on the extent of struggles experienced in the components of MAPEH. Alongside, this chapter presents the results of the statistical analysis conducted anchored upon the hypotheses of this study.

The data gathered were then subjected to a normality test whenever applicable, appropriately analyzed and interpreted statistically according to the various aspects of the problems posted in this study. In the course of statistical analysis, the level of significance is set at 0.05.
